Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher.  He was born 420 BC, in Athens, Greece.  He has a profound effect on the thinking of Western society.
Socrates is considered a major philosopher of Ethics.  His thinking was on the behavior of people.

He believed that knowledge should be sought for the sake of knowledge.  Whether, one would ever use it.  Socrates did not leave any recorded works.  Yet, many of his students recorded his teachings.

In 399 BC, a trial was held against Socrates in Athens.  The charges were that he failed to acknowledge that the city acknowledge gods and he was introducing new deities.  He was found guilty.  He was sentenced to death.  He was ordered to drink a poison called hemlock.  The drinking of hemlock is a very painful way to die.  Socrates last words before he died was "Crito, we owe a rooster to Asclepius.  Please, don't forget to pay the debt."  He felt that death would bring him freedom from his body.
